2007.10.14 Revere Beach and Point of Pines
11:30 am - 1:30 pm dst
Soheil Zendeh
Low tide: 1:25 pm dst
Sky: cloudy, clearing coming in from west
Temperature: 65°F (13°C)
Wind: s 5 - 10 mph (8 - 16 kph)
Visibility: perfect
Tide: dead low
Notes:
The scoter show has come to Revere Beach. There were at least 3000 scoters
scattered all along the beach, close and in beautiful pearly overcast light.
I estimated 1/3 Surf and 2/3 White-winged. I did not spend a lot of time
scoping them because I wanted to get to Point of Pines at dead low tide. So
there are undoubtedly other species mixed in with the masses of Scoters,
including Black.
Point of Pines held a healthy number of Dunlin and Sanderling, a few other
shorebirds, and gulls including Bonaparte's, Laughing, Ring-billed, Herring
and Great Black-backed. Brant have arrived also, in small numbers.
A large very dark, heavily streaked Peregrine harassed the shorebirds twice
within 20 minutes, then landed on the beach 200 feet from me. Actually he
(probably she) looked bedraggled and tired. If you are a young Peregrine,
chasing shorebirds must be really hard and thankless work
Revere Beach birds. Number of bird species: 18
