Belle Isle Bird List August 13, 2006
Belle Isle Marsh
9 - 10 am, 1:30 - 230 pm  (dst)
Ian Davies, Soheil Zendeh
High tide: 3:05 pm
Sky: mostly clear, sunny
Temperature: 70° - 80°F  (21° - 26°C)
Wind: w 5 -10 mph (8 - 16 kph)
Visibility: excellent
bird species: 18
dragonfly and damselfly species: 6
butterfly, moth and skipper species: 8

Notes:

This was a slow day bird wise. Part of the reason was that Ian was more than full-blast into odes (dragonflies and damselflies) and leps (butterflies, skippers, moths). As a result we did not have the time to bemoan the paucity
of shorebirds. We visited three other shorebird hotspots as well: Point of Pines, Lynn Beach and the Douglas Street salt pan at Rumney Marsh and found that only Douglas Street had any concentration of shorebirds. It seems that the cold front and steady nw  and w winds have taken the shorebirds out of here.

The wolf spiders are well advanced in hatching their young. The big mother I photographed last week was still around and had many young on her as well as remnants of her egg sack. One other mother seemed to be hatching her young. One sack was lying by itself under the board. These mothers seem to dig out a space under the board and then spin an incomplete web around their heads, so the abdomen and egg sack stick out into the air.
